12 Factors for Baby’s Development

Ayurveda defines 12 factors contributing to the quality of baby’s development. Visualize if you can, how nutrition can influence all these 12 factors:

1) Paternal influence

2) Maternal influence

3) Soul/ past life karmas (aatmaja)

4) Agni – Tejas (physical and mental digestive strength)

5) Soma – Ojas quality (immunity strength)

6) Vayu – Prana (vitality — life force strength)

7) The 3 mental Gunas – Sattva, Rajas & Tamas and their influence on mood and character

8) The 5 senses (strength of vision, hearing, smell, touch and taste)

9) The Mind – (stability and strength of focus)

10) The Buddhi (intellect or intelligence)

11) Smruti (memory and ability to retain and recall)

12) the 5 elements (the quantity of earth, water, fire, air and ether in a person’s constitution)

In a nutshell, shukra (sperm) and artava (egg) contain the maternal & paternal elements of heredity. These include components of the: 5 elements, 20 qualities of nature, 3 mental gunas (SRT), three doshas (VPK), 7 dhatus (tissues), and refined essence of the three doshas (ojas, tejas and prana–OTP), all of which shape the embryo  and are known as “basic units of hereditary.”

Within the first 2 weeks of pregnancy, the placenta is working, giving oxygen and life force to the baby. The prana taken in by the mother must be refined and delicate, not intense or jarring. Rasa dhatu (plasma) should be sattvic for this intricate process which means it needs to be clear of ama (toxins) or anything that may obstruct the tiny but critical developments. Pitta toxins and kapha phlegm both morning sickness which blocks the flow of prana. The invisible work of mothers in pregnancy is to provide a supportive harmonious energy field and nourishment for her developing baby’s body and blueprint. Proper nutrition of mind and body (the 12 factors) are what create this environment.

4 Key Foods Throughout Pregnancy

rice and dairy

According to Ayurveda, there are 4 key sattvic foods used in varied ways throughout pregnancy for most mamas: new basmati rice, pure ghee, butter and milk. These foods are naturally sattvic (harmonious and pure), building, easy on the digestion when properly used, and do not create mental and emotional negativity in their nature.

For vegan mamas, the list of 4 becomes 1 – just new basmati rice (not aged, and not brown due to the heating quality of brown rices), and these mothers often crave the three dairy options during pregnancy. Whatever foods are actually used, much care must be taken to substitute for these foods with sattvic, pitta and vata pacifying, ojas building qualities of other foods. For example, some common substitutes for dairy include:

Old, processed or life-force weakened foods undermine nutrition, as does slow maternal elimination. The stress of our prevalent Type A/rajasic overdrive in modern cultures will deplete the life-energy and nutrients for mama and baby. Poor digestion or poor food choice can create ama, which can lead to morning sickness and other problems.

Many other foods are important too, of course, but these take a special grounding, pitta and vata balancing, and ojas enhancing role.

Panchakarma — Ayurvedic Cleansing for Conception

hands on back

To prepare for receiving the highest vibration soul and providing the healthiest new body for their baby, the mother and father both to need to calm and balance their doshas, eliminate ama and reduce rajas and tamas in their minds. This manifests as a need to purify body and emotions in some way.

Ayurveda spells out how we can prepare the body and mind for healthy sperm and ova and optimal conception. It’s called Panchakarma and post Panchakarma Rasayana (rejuvenation therapies). This is a fascinating education for practitioners, but you’ll want to attend the Dhatu and Panchakarma advanced classes with Vaidya Bharat (ayurvedsadhana.com) to unfold this juicy understanding.

Although each mother has brilliant natural maps for growing a baby, she and her partner can make choices in preparation for supporting baby’s plan for incarnation, to cleanse and then strengthen the intricate communications between Baby’s DNA and unfolding her subtle body blueprint. Conception calls on mother and father’s reproductive essence in the sperm and ovum, on their consciousness and on their desires, to match baby’s desire and life purposes. The blueprint structures are built to the soul’s purpose and style, and everyone wants this to be in greatest bliss and success for life.

Panchakarma has been proven to significantly, safely and gently remove significant amounts of petrochemical pollutants in a short time. The body stores these in fat, reproductive, brain and endocrine tissues and these are not easily removed by western cleansing methods. The unique methods of cleansing employed by Ayurveda are safe and gentle, but it is very important that it is done properly to prevent side effects; many practitioners are only partially trained.

Rasayana therapies are rebuilding and rejuvenative, perfect for preparing to concieve and the body receives the benefits of rasayana much more effectively after the Panchakarma sequences are complete. Cleansing without rejuvenation afterwards is not a good idea for those wishing to conceive!

Ojas: The Essence of Baby’s Development

cute white baby

Ancient Ayurvedic texts by Vagbhat describe–in detail–embryonic nourishment at conception and for gestation by the 5 elements. They describe the seat of the soul as a sixth tissue (the nervous system), which is the next to last tissue in the sequence of tissue nutrition in the body. The quality of mind and connectedness to this life are dependent upon the quality of the nervous tissue. Vagbhat explains that ojas – the finest product of maternal and paternal digestion and contained in the reproductive seed material — is the essence of the embryo and fetus, and the first component for baby’s tissue formation, and Ayurvedic teachers explain that stem cells are nourished by ojas.

Nourishing mama’s ojas throughout pregnancy (and postpartum) is a central topic in Ayurveda. The many refinements on healthy digestion and transformation of food that is spelled out in Ayurveda are about creating good quality ojas — because ojas is the finest product of digestion. It is the foundation of good health.

When a mother enters pregnancy with a healthy diet and lifestyle, making the necessary changes to enhance ojas is straight-forward — and she can easily make proactive choices that will help build the best quality body for baby. But when she has pitta or kapha ama (accumulated wastes from incomplete digestion or toxicities in the body), or excessive rajas or tamas in the mind (anger, depression, and so on) these conditions can tend to vibrate at odds with gestational priorities, and undermine the baby’s development.

Ayurvedic Bodywork in Pregnancy

If you are an Ayurvedic masseuse or have specialized in postnatal bodywork, consider expanding your package of offerings to a value specific month by month service for your clients.  Here is the advice sourced from the Dhanwantari Institute, from some of the classical texts, with a few comments from the peanut gallery.

Because the fetus in the first three months is of very unstable, jelly like consistency and hyper-responsive to maternal experience, Ancient Ayurvedic texts tend not to advise regular massage the first three months. Some gentle oil/massage on marma points and especially the hands and feet (not deep digs however) is considered often beneficial however.  Points to avoid are similar to in accupuncture and other modalities.

Oiling in general is considered to increase warmth in the body, and mama’s pitta is up especially in the first trimester, so warm oil massage may not be best idea as full body treatment.  Use of coconut will be preferred, or more energy work such as marma therapy, polarity, acupressure, etc.  Heightened pitta continues though generally not as dramatically, with vata on the increase naturally also after the first trimester.

In any case, what mama experiences, Ayurveda believes baby experiences, so stress or intensity to maternal body can create some strain to baby’s system which is living in heightened sensitivity and delicacy at this time.  Or mild massage can be be beneficially stimulating to the marmani for mother and baby.

From 4 months to labor, massage has specific advisories also, according to the Dhanvantari Institute. In our forth month, gentle massage which benefits mama’s mind and mood helps stabilize baby’s heart, taking extra care around mother’s abdomen.   We know that just applying warm oil against the lay of the hair increases neurotransmitters in a good way.  Applying oil is a more appropriate way to speak of massage style than what most call massage for this time.

At this time oil padding over the vagina is recommended also.

In the 6th month, gentle breast massage, especially nipples, is advised with herbalized or plain coconut oil.  Why 6th month specifically, I have no idea.  Perhaps this is recommended from 6th month on; I would say so.  Modern research has found that twisting and stretching of the nipples this early does not seem to really make a difference, similarly starting so early on stretching of the perineum.  Oiling serves to promote natural elasticity and comfort however.

In the 7th month, an herbal paste on the stretching and sometimes burning tissues along with massage is valuable, and massage can be especially helpful with swelling on the feet.  Although the article does not say which herbs, I would choose demulcent and skin herbs and oils, and essential oils like myrrh, geranium, ylang ylang, chamomile, rosewood and vetiver for the skin which are seriously committed to quality, as they will be influencing baby in utero also.

Massage schools teach what therapists agree, with the strain on body mechanics of weight changes, deeper work along spine, hips and neck/shoulders feels especially good, done in well supported side-lying position.  Yet, due to softening of connective tissues from the hormone relaxin in some mothers early to mid pregnancy, deep work may need to be modified to not overstretch already easily stretched ligaments and tendons.  Again, mothers may crave and need some extra support to pregnancy discomforts, so personalized choices by therapist and mother are important.  Use of the Ayurvedic abhyanga style oil massage gives many relaxing and balancing benefits without going into excessively deep tissue work.

In the 8th and 9th month, vaginal massage and oil padding of the vaginal area is advised, and from 36 weeks/9th month a small 30 ml basti on alternate days is advised on regular basis to lubricate the tissues. The quantity of oil does not significantly increase apana vayu, but offers good preparation for birth in multiple ways. This practice is discussed by several practitioners including Vaidya Seema Datta in the UK, on Jan 13th, 2013 in the pertinatalayurveda forum.

“Tissues being softened and elastic, less resistance during the delivery results in bearable pain and many of our mums are able to deliver without any intervention with much less average delivery time” reports Seema. She advises this protocol regularly with all her expectant client at 36 weeks with olive oil or sesame oil, unless mother is post due date. Then a mix of castor and sesame is more indicated.

Once a mother has gone into early labor, another warm small oil enema of about 1/3-1/2 cup, after full body abhyanga (oil massage) is advised for natural body relaxation and easier labor.  Ayudoulas know that the mother with vaginal delivery can benefit from postpartum massage as soon as she would like.  After major abdominal delivery, application of warm oil all over her body except avoiding abdomen is still very beneficial for maternal Vata, but massage is contraindicated until the wound is sealed, mother feels ready, and doctor or midwife gives the ok for this gentle treatment.

Homemade Gripe Water Recipes for Colicky Babies

8 tips for Baby’s immediate support

Food related colic takes about 2-3 weeks to accumulate.  Let’s first talk about immediate comfort!  When baby is uncomfortable from colic or the beginnings of it, it usually takes several things to keep comfort on the rise.   If the cause is birth trauma or structural, it will show up right away.

Beautiful work is being done for the latter with Dr. Ray Castellino and others.  If you would like to understand preventions for the all too common dietary factors, treating the cause, and why the following works (breast or bottle fed) , check out our core webinars, Ayurvedic Maternal and Newborn Care and Nutrition.

Here are 6 Homemade gripe water recipes

  1. fennel tea – 1 t boil 3-4 min in ¾ cup water
  2. 1 c water, ½ t each coarse ground dill, ajwain, fenugreek, and fennel seeds. Boil 3-4 min. cool, strain, use dropper to relieve gas, help burp, reduce tummy aches
  3. coarse grind 2 tsp ea coriander, cumin, ajwain, anise, dill, vidanga. Add to 250 ml water. Slow boil to 100 ml. Strain and give. (parasites too).
  4. ¼ small onion, boiled 5 min. in 2 oz water. Strain, Add 2 oz cool water, 1 tsp succanat or agave give in bottle. or use 2 cloves garlic, prepare similarly. Allows support to suck, breaks up gas.
  5. tea of organge leaves – wash, boil to sterilize and bring out properties, with a little succanat or agave to taste
  6. last resorts, still gives comfort:. Beer w/o carbonation. or Dissolve peppermint candy in Hot water, give 15-20 ml of either in bottle. support to burp.

8 General support keys for baby include:

  1. Infant massage is well researched for it’s benefit to unhappy tummy times.  Be sure to do the belly massage techniques, including Paddle Wheel, I Love U, and Sun Moon strokes, and use something like a baby hot water bottle – she can lay tummy down, enjoy the water rocking warmth, breath more easily for the lift at the midsection, and be more easily patted to sleep.  (use the linked green text to access our 3 hour distance learner’s recording or webinar option, or 8 hour training to teach Mamas).
  2. Babies go into light sleep first, not deep sleep like adults, so it takes a while when their tummies hurt!  It often may take 10-20 minutes.  Help them stay relaxed, and don’t blame yourself if it takes a while.  That’s your job priority, not cleaning the house.
  3. Take a hot bath together, then sleep (together!).
  4. Use ghee or castor oil for constipation – on nipple, fingertip, or sometimes also to rub the anus when tight.  Or give Baby 1 tsp extra virgin pure olive oil.  See in 10-15 minutes, they are likely to be quiet.  Learn at least 2 reasons why this and other remedies work in our core course, Ayurvedic Maternal and Newborn Care and Nutrition.
  5. Sometimes we may need extra oomph.  Essential oils topically of fennel, ginger, basil, nutmeg, chamomile or stronger used topically, can give quick relief.  Let baby’s nose help you choose, but just waft it for a moment under their nose, don’t hold it there.  Watch their reaction.  Dilute 1:2 with food/massage oil.  How to use safely and which, with opportunity to ask questions, in our Essential Oils, More than Basics.
  6. If nursing or formula feeding, the quality of the milk should be evaluated.  AyuDoulas are trained to help mothers be nourished themselves in a way that best nourishes baby.
  7. This is a big one too – Avoid overfeeding – after 2 weeks with term babies, give 2 hour gap from end to start of next feeding, for digestion (more time with formula). Sweet milk on top of part-digested milk creates ama, wast products which complicate.
  8. Handling yourself and Baby – such a dear and valuable discussion is found in Robin Lim’s classic reference, After the Baby’s Birth (ignore her food chapter, it has tummy and mood issue creating recipes)

So there is immediate things we can do, and if full blown colic has manifested, it will take some time to reverse.  In the meantime, here’s a toolkit for palliative care.  At the same time, it is important to assess and correct maternal diet, emotional climate best you can, and if baby is using formula, choices there.   A newborn human’s digestive system is immature for at least 6 months.  Adding complications to this maturing process sets a long term stage for health issues.

Addressing the root cause takes more time, and is SO worth it.   Quality of digestion and results of the digestive process through all the layers of the GI tract as well as for the 7 layers of tissue nutrition (dhatu prinanam), 3 waste products of the body (malas) and more are specialties of Ayurvedic medicine.  All contribute to short and long term health.

Kangaroo care

See newborns’ breast crawl,Triplets holding hands, and baby wearing videos

Hey, today I was searching for a kangaroo care video I saw last year, and find more goodies to share.  Especially because many of my students come from the Ayurvedic world first before the mother and baby care world – I’m sure you will enjoy!  I so wish I had done this with my children, and received it myself of course.  Fortunate and grateful I am my mother was at home with us, and nursed us some.

BREAST CRAWL

Unicef sponsors an international policy to support baby’s first minutes/hour after birth by naturally finding the breast to nurse.  Bottle fed or breast later on, the benefits of colostrum are essential for life immune and gut health.  Watch a baby find the nipple and self latch within a few minutes, in this video.  Watch his awareness and focus change when he sees the nipple.  Babies born under sedation or early cord cutting may need more help.

________________

Here is another of several videos on topic.  You can see how conscious these babies are as they see the dark aerola and begin to figure out how to move to it.  So beautiful!  People think babies are not conscious?  To see this one begin to figure out his mouth, to know that is what he needs to open wide, and to assess his body and relation to what he knows he needs to do …

KANGAROO CARE IN HOSPITALS TEACH US ALL

A very dear interview of Sunnybrook hospital staff by a little girl about when she was less than 1 pound herself.  Simple from the heart, and clear.  There are many online videos on topic, but this is just so sweet  😉 – watch through to the end!  She was worn by mama and papa many hours a day.

________________

This hospital does very simple kangaroo care – not fancy props.  At least an hour a day is advised here.

In this Kenyan hospital with shortage of incubators see many different fabrics/ways to kangaroo their babies.  Interesting discussion, good education, mamas wear their babies for hours.

________________

Here is the one I was looking for, updated with discussion up front. The mums and dads as well as babies are so worth watching as well as listening to in this 21 minute video.  Translated subtitles, from the Institute of Neonatology, Belgrade, Serbia.

Watch for the mutual comfort the twins and triplets – newborn, give each other.  Take note of the kangaroo care wraps the hospital provides – they do a zip up or velcro.  I want to see these in the stores.

And how they bathe a newborn premie the first time, starting wrapped.

This TED Talk shows another lovely, successful in third world villages low cost and low technology solution to keeping leeeetle premies warm – for many hours safely.  Most parents are not willing or perhaps even able after a difficult birth, to do kangaroo for 4-6 hours on end, though with the leeeetles it is so needed.

It will be good to see more of is this technology combined with kangaroo care.  Created by a team of Stanford students who gave up their studies to move to India for 2-3 years to develop, test and successfully launch this Embrace Global solution!

WEARING BABY IN A SLING

Great for kangaroo care!   Do it bare chested, and baby in diaper only.  There are many clips of the variations of using slings with babies on youtube.

Here’s one on how to Moby-wrap your newborn from a 3 weeks postpartum mama – I extend her gratitudes!  .  SIMPLE clear instructions.  I’ve seen it done and done it myself but couldn’t remember well till I saw this.

Ring slings – cradle and burp carry positions/management

Do you know how often your child goes #2?

As long as we are changing diapers, we know.  But do we know what it means – how often, and the consistency?  It is a primary signal of baby or child — or adult health factors.  Knowing your young or even older child’s bathroom habits will help so much to protect their health and happiness.  Really.

In all imbalance types, Ayurveda can offer simple easily understood guidance using properties of lifestyle and food. Today we talk about what is mostly the first type, showing some strength in her constitution to the third.

There is much which can be said, and FYI, the quality of bowel movements are categorized in three general ways:

  1. hard – dry, rough, this may be even pellet like.  Not as frequent; ie, constipated.  This is not healthy, not comfortable, and often accompanied by gas, bloating and or painful spasms (colic in young ones), even bleeding.  This is a sign of excess Vata dosha (the functional effect of air and ether elements combined).
  2. watery or loose – frequent through the day mustardy yellow cottage cheesey curds are normal and healthy for baby.  When older, or if it becomes green, mucousy or really wet, be concerned about loss of minerals as well as dehydration and give electrolytes, as well as consulting your doc or midwife.  This often happens with flu or other infection.  Loose but not runny wet diarrhea is a sign often of high pitta (functional combination of fire and water elements), candida perhaps, or other parasites can give this also.
  3. well formed, full, firm but soft – this is good.  This is a sign of good kapha usually (functional combination of earth and water elements), unless there is mucous in it, then kapha is in excess.  Kapha’s constipation is just slower and more difficult though not usually painful.

After other foods besides breast milk are added – formula or “solids” – it becomes thicker, smellier, etc, and commonly because the “solids” or formula are introduced without proper culturing of baby’s digestive system (no blame here, you didn’t know!) constipation and bad odor are both very common.  Mamas eating constipating foods will also give this tendency to newborn babies.  If baby’s prakruti (and vikruti) ie, genetic/body type makeup and imbalances are more fragile type than mama’s, it will show more in the little one.

For this mama who asks:

My 18 month old gets constipated. Had a weekly bm as an infant. Now it’s every 2-3 days. But I sense she is uncomfortable as it is too long. What do you recommend? I was thinking oil into the rectum? Almond oil?

She has no trouble with a bm once she starts having one. She is simply backed up. Her stool is often hard but not like pellets, actually rather large and typically with no foul odour.

Its just that there is no regularity and now that she is speaking if she does not go daily she can tell me she is not comfortable and has to go.

Pay attention to these simple words in your baby’s life:  Constipation is dry, rough, harder and lighter than more moist and oily stool.  There is a tendency to feel more cold, although in some cases it may be that mama takes too many herbal digestives and digestion/absorption is extra sharp.  Let’s start with emphasizing more moisture, smoothing textures, warm, heavy and oily qualities in foods and environment to start creating balance.

Warm oil baby massage is proven to help.

Diet is also very important.  Your 18 month old will be eating other foods.  It is a good sign that there is no foul odor, and that once the bowel moves it is not painful for Baby.  However, a long term habit of only once or 3 times a week indicates long term imbalances. She is little enough, it may correct pretty easily with dietary modifications.

Reduce dry, rough, light foods like toast, crackers and cheerios and thick, hard to digest cheeses and meats.  Soups and softly cooked moist things from veggies to simply prepared puddings are good, freshly cooked, rather than from a jar or leftover the next day. Cook rice, cereals etc with extra moisture and add fats and a bit of gentle spicing to her foods. All these things can be contributing to or reversing constipation. Definitely avoid corn – any non organic corn is pretty guaranteed to be genetically modified (see the movie online, Genetic Roulette for a real heads up).

Not knowing more about maternal or baby’s diet, I would advise not only the usual of making sure warm water is given the baby 1/2 – 1 hour after eating (can be made with very weak fennel tea, maybe 1/8 tsp seeds boiled 5 minutes in two cups of water – make fresh daily).  Add to baby’s food clarified butter, sometimes coconut oil if it is not winter, sesame or olive oil to baby’s food (vary them, not together).  Avocados are probably already part of her diet?  If at 18 months she is getting nut butter, thin it with water quite a bit, and perhaps add a little of the dark “highest lignin” flax oil to it, maybe 1/2 tsp per serving.

Begin each new food about 1 week apart, and include some “middle of the road” spices to ensure good digestion of food including the fats.  Cumin, coriander, turmeric, fennel, dill, caraway, cinnamon, pinch cardamom, a little cooked garlic even, all can be used (2 or 3 at a time not all at once).   No nutmeg when bowels are slow.  Commonly people give such bland foods and without fats to babies.  Spices help transform food and support good appetite and digestion.  Baby has been getting them through mama in utero, and through breast milk.  Why stop?

Good fats have so many virtues.  It is another topic, but please note, they beneficially lubricate while nourishing and stabilizing long burning energy!   Early postpartum mamas are advised to ingest extra of these good fats, for both their own comfort and rejuvenation, and for rich nourishing and balanced breast milk.  Baby and mama will do very well without uncomfortable laxatives by including more warmth, oilness, moisture, and also moist slippery quality of foods.  So, stewed dried fruits, which are rich in fiber, iron and muscle building nutrients, are also decidedly slippery and help things move through.  A bit of cinnamon or tiny pinch of clove is great to include therein.

Newborns on breast or bottle only benefit greatly in my practice by a fingertip (or nippletip) of organic clarified butter several times a day also, for constipation.

If the case is more severe, rub a little of this or castor oil on anus to relax (remember, warm!).  If none of these things work, you can give very small oil enema – using bulb syringe, maybe a tablespoon at most of one of the above, or yes, almond or sesame oil can be used.  Avoid sesame in summer with babies prone to rash.  The oil not only lubricates the bowel, it loosens chronically caked stuff, gently, and also nourishes the body through this amazing organ, the colon.  I have seen mamas not infrequently, given 1/3 cup enema of warm sesame oil, retain the whole thing at night and absorb all or most of it.

We live in a culture dedicated to low fat everything after some misreading of a research study several decades ago, reports Sally Fallon in the amazing first chapter of her cookbook, Nourishing Traditions.  I have the cookbook – don’t use the recipes personally, but want all my students to read the first 80 pages.  She has done a great service with the corrections to many dietary beliefs, and has documented it very well.  Let’s look again!

Some oils penetrate all 7 tissues and can nourish through the skin, like sesame oil, as Dr. Vasant Lad explains in depth about the qualities and actions of different oils on each tissue in his comprehensive Textbook of Ayurveda, Volume 3.  Warm oil massage on baby with sesame oil will nourish all 7 tissues and help re-oleate Baby.  Warm oily clockwise circles on baby’s tummy, damp heat on the abdomen, and simple knees to tummy ankle/leg presses will really help too.   Do any leg “bicycles” slowly, not too fast, to allow mind-body connection, integration and coordination to be cultivated.

Although you can give your baby a little temporary increase in oil, even 1/4 tsp of castor oil or a little oil enema and get things moving, it is so important to tend to the cause and change it before layers of complication cascade.  You will thank yourself for taking the time and your child will so benefit, all their life, from this good start.

Prompted by this mama today, let’s summarize a few important things:

  1. Contrary to what most docs will say, if baby doesn’t go at least daily, it is not healthy.
  2. It may be common, “normal, but you can see, Baby is not comfortable!
  3. Older kids may be grumpy and not know why.
  4. Younger or older kids with chronic constipation will begin to unfold layers of the disease process from the backed up toxins, dryness, hardness, discomforts…. it may manifest as GI tract stuff or migrate into headaches, skin problems, even nervous system problems (that is not a comprehensive list, just a few notes!)  If these get treated symptomatically rather than identifying the root cause, those will continue also as chronic problems….
  5. Long term chronic patterns can begin with imbalance from birth.
  6. If it is chronic, it is more difficult to turn around and the effects may be more serious.

OK, I’m not trying to scare anyone, just want you to give yourself maybe needed motivation to make some changes.  It usually means dietary and lifestyle changes.  It’s worth it.

Tips for Tempers

Here’s quick tips to teach your client, and more if you have time to read the full blog.  These are good supports, and important preventives.  This first is free and she can do this while baby is falling asleep in her arms – “alternate nostril pranayama”.   More tips below are low or no cost choices also.

This breath practice balances the hemispheres, calms, freshens, and brings peace and contentment.  Yoga teachers, Ayurvedics and Doulas – be sure to teach your client the gentlest form of this yogic technique at this time.  It helps so much for life force purifying, freshening, moving and balancing.

Here’s instructions for your client:

  1. check which nostril you are breathing from now.  Right is solar and heating, left is lunar and cooling.  Let’s balance first, then can do more cooling “lunar pranayama” if you know it and need it.
  2. sit comfortably upright or in whatever rocking chair is comfortable.
  3. use your free hand (right if there is a choice); thumb is used for closing one nostril, ring/little fingers for the other, when it is time.
  4. breathe in and out nice easy and full.
  5. close one nostril with thumb and breathe in the other.  Naturally full breath in.
  6. switch to close other nostril and breathe a Naturally full breath out, then in on that side.  No strain or holding.
  7. switch using thumb.  Out, then in.
  8. Switch,  Out/in.    Switch Out/In …
  9. Continue, for 10 minutes.
If temper is up, do it.  If fear or anxiety dominates, do it.  See what two times a day does.  You are sitting with your baby falling asleep in your arms anyway, right?
Often we need more tools.  Here are some insights into what an AyurDoula can do.  These involve simple changes, it does not have to be about taking something away.  I believe in the crowd out instead of take-away approach.

When we get stressed and tired, it is so easy to loose it.  How many mamas have not experienced this?!    It is common and natural to snip or even have thoughts of hurting someone – our baby! for a few moments when we feel trapped in overwhelm.   Yet consistently negative emotions are the highest risk for baby – and for mom.  They can, left to grow, become life threatening, as we all know from the news*.

“Type A” – “pitta” mamas especially – and – at the end of pitta season all of us,  which is right now creates  special call to attend to such conditions.  Overlay the astrology if you believe in it, which says especially until the 23rd of this September, there are extra influences to promote short fuses.  Here’s some tips for your clients.

Postpartum mothers are on duty 24/7, no matter what help they have.  Think about the many bodily changes – tons of invisible work Mama has to do in addition to being on call for Baby.  Do I need to elaborate on other responsibilities?  We do what we can.  And we see the need for a better way!

This is where DOOOOLAS can dooooo so much in such simple little things ways, to prevent problems.  We mother the mothers at this time with the umbrella of love, wisdom, timely guidance practical supports. – Ayudoulas are specially trained for this work.  Or call on whatever friends and family and other helpers are there, under organizing guidance of an Ayurvedic who understands the special management of this “42 Days for 42 Years” window.

Let’s start with what Ayurvedics know as Vata dosha – the air and space element metabolic functions in the body.  Yes, even with high pitta (fire/water) dominant in a mother’s constitution, vikruti (imbalance) and summer to fall seasonal exacerbations, we have to look at calming vata after birth.  It can push the pitta overlays to flare up quickly.  And vata needs warmth among other things.  How to?

Avoid energetically heat producing foods and favor the season’s coolers – succulent sweet fruits and vegetables, coconut, some pomegranate and grape is great, gently cook more coriander and cilantro into foods, and organic milk rather than yoghurt or cheese helps.  But take them room temp or warm, not cold, to prevent gas, bloating and even colic contributing influences.

Also very important – enough good fats, carbs and snacks promote much needed stability and rebuilding.  At this time of year, favor clarified butter (“ghee”) and coconut oil, for their cooling properties.  Ghee not only cools, it strengthens digestive enzyme functions, and helps carry out impurities from the cells better than butter right now.

Many common chill out measures especially pitta dominant mamas will call on – can be shifted.  Most of her chill down choices make her feel more dry, brittle, fragile, emotionally chilly, ungrounded and fearful, ie, vata exacerbated.  Minimize and replace things like

  • cold temperature foods and drinks – replace with thermous of cooling but digestive and lactation supportive weak herbal teas kept in a thermos for easy access.  Fennel, cumin, coriander, fresh ginger are good helpful – 1/2 tsp of the mix to 1 quart of hot water!  Cooling grains, like basmati (not brown) rice, quinoa and oat are preferred; cooling diary – clarified butter and organic cream top milk vs other forms, and taken warm temp cools; cooling or make the most of it – iron rich – sweeteners vs honey; cooling proteins include easy to digest small legumes, or poultry for non vegetarians.
  • bland foods – add “middle of the road” enzymatic seasonings which don’t spike heat but help digestive “fires” and make the food tasty too – food needs to be appeetizing!
  • Cucumber – and salads in general – by my experience is guaranteed gas for mom and baby used raw – I’ve cooked and seasoned it to delicious satisfaction, or you should avoid these.  Try steaming asparagus or another vegetable on the “foods to favor” list in our cookbook, and serve with a lime not vinegar vinaigrette with well roasted garlic.  This will probably satisfy salad desires for now.
  • dry quick foods like toast and crackers constipate and don’t satisfy – serve flat breads with soups and lots of ghee or other suitable fat to ground and nourish.
  • high sugar low fat sweets hit fast and hard and though even this is preferred to nothing when tempers flare – give her a little to keep blood sugar up then make a sweet with lots of butterfat, coconut, cacao butter, nuts or full fat dairy – you see adding protein and fats gives startup fuel from the sugars and carbs last a little longer, then the fats give stable long burning fuel.
  • chocolate has sweet, oily and bitter taste.  Good change she needs more of all, but craving chocolate let’s look at adding more bitter taste appropriately  – turmeric, fenugreek, and maybe a little well seasoned and cooked dandelion may crowd out that craving.
  • leftovers or pre-prepared foods to save hot kitchen time are generally devoid of prana – life force – and we say, are tamasic.  This means heavy, dulling, depressive, frustrating energies prevail with these.  Use easy cook methods and make smaller portions.

Lifestyle

  • Eating out gives probably GMO and free radical producing fats and other non-rejuvenating foods, though it gives her a break from the kitchen.  Ask if you can work with her best friend to renew the food chain a little longer if that is what’s needed.  Use this budget towards a postpartum home spa treatment instead.  Three in a row can really not just safety net but reverse many in free-fall emotionally.
  • An intense, distracting movie increases the fire element – singing or story time with family at night, more sattvic (light, love and peace filled) movies, like that are best.
  • Skipping naps.  Guess what……..this is high risk emotionally.  Need help fitting it in?  Let’s talk about the many factors, and who/what might best help.
  • Spending hours talking, processing your emotions – usually means you skipped your naps, as well, and probably ate fast food.  Can your friends value their time with  you at even $5 or $10/hour in contribution to your care at this time?
  • There are many ways to think creatively and each situation needs it’s own TLC this way.  AyurDoulas are trained to apply the needed principles to whatever resources are at hand to make the most of a mother’s experience.

Moms need to feel growing stability and rejuvenation, as well as fresh qualities in their early postpartum, even though many foods and lifestyle things that give these can complicate there are many which help.  For both hot tempered impatient or blaming moods,  and fearful, depressed and anxious moods settle, we see them settle down much with simple measures.

Stability and tissue rejuvenation are among the top priorities for mothers after childbirth according to the ancient Ayurvedic medical textbooks.  We see that the psychology, the heart and mind can be saved from self or other’s blame and most efficiently addressed taking proper care of her body’s needs at this time.  Such a blessing!

* Those mothers, whose anger or negativity became so serious we heard about them  in those very sad news stories, were all on some mood medicine cocktail inappropriate for them, according to Dr. Ann Blake-Tracey, and her website, Drug Awareness.

Of course – many mothers have pushed the envelope too far or have such fatigue their genetic predispositions are giving serious conditions beyond the scope of a general article.  We can’t presume to diagnose, treat or cure in this piece or as Ayudoulas in practice, and must encourage appropriate consultation for a client’s primary health care provider.  Postpartum mood disorders can be life threatening.

These simple supports are likely to still be helpful under this greater umbrella of licensed medical care, and for some clients, their path takes them out of our hands.

Baby’s genetic memory

Baby’s genetic memory – Do your clients understand the impact of their choices?  Sometimes they can use a nudge to enhance as we have to call it, “compliance” with our health recommendations.  This one may be a sleeper, yet deeper than most realize!  New studies confirm what Ayurved has known for thousands of years.

Ayurvedic medicine reports that our ancestor’s illnesses, viral and otherwise influence our genetics, and show up with iridilogical analysis (iris diagnosis).  For instance, even if Baby has not been exposed to a certain chemical this life, and Grandma has, Baby shows genetic influence of this toxin’s damage.   Recent studies add important weight to this discussion –

“We find that a single exposure to a common-use fungicide (vinclozolin) three generations removed alters the physiology, behavior, metabolic activity, and transcriptome in discrete brain nuclei in descendant males, causing them to respond differently to chronic restraint stress.(http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2012/05/15/1118514109.abstract)”

Find an interview video with the head researcher, Dr. David Crews and more understanding how the impact manifests epigenetically, i.e. on  genetic expression: http://www.naturalnews.com/035965_epigenetics_inheritance_synthetic_chemicals.html#ixzz1voBpzwHt ”

Then find our discussion of how and which essential oils can help clear both the receptor sites for DNA expression, and miswritten code, in our class, Essential Oils Basics.

We have profound tools from Ayurvedic medicine for preparing the body even to genetic level with Ayurvedic Panchakarma cleansing, and special preparations targeting the nuclear level of the cells such as tikta ghee.  Those who are not yet pregnant and seek to be are in best position to reverse unwanted changes.  Those who are, or with newborns and older, have much to gain also – each according to their specific “season” of life changes, body type and imbalances, and season in the more commonly understood term.

We have much support we can give our clients, and they so often need it, more than ever.  Even those who seem well, eat organic, all these things are less than enough in our polluted times and with the blessings and challenges of our forefathers and mothers.   Native American elders’  warning takes on depth, not just cultural, to make choices for positive influence on the next 7 generations.  And we have the burden of correction for the many who have not made wise decisions.  I hope you will take to heart and into your toolkit resources and service which deeply helps.

Peace –
