Can I fulfill some of my Ayurdoula training requirements during my own ayurvedic postpartum care?
Yes; you will want to be in touch at least by phone. As you know, your internship requirements begin as soon as you start practicing some of the skills and are in touch live or by phone with your preceptor in specific ways about your practice experience. Sometimes a number of your contact hours can be logged after giving birth to your own baby. The blog link above discusses some of the key features to this approach; please enquire for more information with your phone number, location, dates and other relevant information.
How to Order Needed Background
Please see downloadable documents at the bottom of this page. They include the packages and single units available with costs and payment methods; recommended reading for home study including needed terminology/sources, and instructions you will need to send your local copy shop to print out the materials.
Developed and revised over many years in the field, these are the same in depth printed materials used during training intensives. Save yourself time and shipping by ordering these as downloadable files in pdf format. Enjoy the added benefit of keyword searching your materials on your computer!
Please drop me an email saying that your order is on it's way specifying your background and which units you want, to ensure speedy order completion.
The Pros, Cons and Options for Home or Alternative Study
These options are offered for both families who cannot attend the training program, and for Ayurvedic practitioners, Midwives or other licensed health professionals who simply want this valuable information and cannot attend. Each unit includes objectives, tests, tables of contents etc. Included also is an internship packet for the practice proficiencies, for the student's home practice and study.
Please bear in mind that what is learned by correspondence study is just not the same depth of understanding or detail, and lacks the exposure with professionals in the field. It also makes it more a self-directed thing to manifest the structured time away from other callings to actually cover the material well. For this reason NAMA (National Ayurvedic Medical Association) does not recognize study by correspondence hours towards national certifications in their advanced Ayurvedic Practitioner recognition or listings, although they have recognized the directly precepted AyurDoula (class trainings) trainings which use the same notes offered here for home study, providing considerable detail. Sacred Window Ayurveda offers special certificates of completion for home study or some combination of home and class studies options.
Course of study
The modules of study are as described for Level I and II here and attached as down loadable pdf file at the bottom of this page.
Ayurvedic Foundations
Again, many Ayurvedic schools cover this material and we simply reaquest you discuss with us your background before ordering the AYurvedic Postpartum core material, or persue it as needed. We can provide, or depending upon the depth of your interest, parts of the AYURVEDIC FOUNDATIONS AND COOKING LEVEL I material are available by correspondence or book study with Dr. Robert Svoboda, Vasant Lad's Textbook of Ayurveda, and others including many books such as Deepak Chopra's Perfect health (we now can provide these units also with needed information, see below).
Ayurvedic Postpartum Care
The AYURDOULA LEVEL I AND II material is available for home reference or correspondence study by email/download. The AyurDoula units are detailed written student materials. You may choose to include the internship option for guidance with your skills practicum, via telephone contact hours.
The AyurDoula materials will fill 2 three ring 2 inch binders comfortably, printed out double sided. The cookbook forthcoming will be separate, and we currently have a wonderful collection used in the 8 day training intensives of over 50 pages of recipes plus key guidelines which is available now.
Note that the 2 prereq units, Ayurvedic Foundations 1 and Ayurvedic Cooking are also separate from the Ayurvedic Postpartum Care units. If you do not have these - Ayurvedic Foundations or Ayurvedic Nutrition - we have detailed study/reference notes for these available . There are a number of good books on the subject for reference.
Still seeking NAMA recognizable hours?
Direct preceptor contact hours can sometimes be arranged by one on one internship with an approved AyurDoula, which along with written tests, phone preceptorship as you work with your practice clients, and documented practice proficiencies is another way to gain certification hours as well as a deeper skill working with Ayurveda for postpartum mothers. Please enquire for more detail, and see this blog post, How to train as Ayurdoula, and receive care same time?
Warmly;
